Mersey Gateway lanes shut after lorry and car crash

Two lanes were shut on the Mersey Gateway bridge following a crash involving a lorry and a Suzuki car.

Cheshire Police told the ECHO the collision was reported at 8.30am on the northbound carriageway. A force spokeswoman said the HGV driver was uninjured while a man in the turquoise Suzuki suffered minor injuries.

She said a woman remained in the car while paramedics checked on her before extracting her from the vehicle. Drink and drug tests came back negative.

The spokeswoman said that during the incident it appeared that after the initial impact between the two vehicles, "the car has spun and hit the wall of the bridge".

The collision led to tailbacks for northbound traffic heading from Runcorn towards Widnes.

Emergency vehicles could be seen parked up on the bridge near the main support column closest to the Widnes side with between five and 10 vehicles in attendance including police, fire, highways, and an ambulance that made its way through the tailback from Runcorn to access the scene.

A dark-coloured lorry could be seen within the cordon.

Lanes one and two northbound were shut.

Some traffic could be seen heading slowly towards Widnes.
