Mercedes melts onto M6 carriageway as car transporter bursts into flames

Pictures show seven cars were completely destroyed after a car transporter burst into flames on the M6.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the M6 northbound between junctions 19 (Knutsford) and 20 (Lymm) following reports of a fire. Once fire engines from Winsford, Alsager, Lymm, Irlam and Altrincham arrived at the scene they found a car transporter with seven vehicles well alight.

The tractor unit was detached from the trailer and Cheshire Police closed the motorway while firefighters put out the blaze. Queues stretched for six miles from the scene of the fire, leaving motorists waiting in queues for over 90 minutes.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed nobody was injured in the incident, but all seven of the cars were written off. Pictures of the car transporter after the blaze was extinguished showed car body work melting onto the carriageway.

A spokesperson from Cheshire Police said: "Firefighters are tackling a blaze involving the trailer section of a car transporter. Seven vehicles on the trailer are involved in the blaze.

"The tractor unit has been detached from the trailer. The officer currently in charge of the incident has requested M6 north be closed while the fire is tackled.

"Firefighters in breathing apparatus are tackling the fire with hose reel jets. All vehicles on the trailer are well alight. There are no casualties involved in this incident.

"The two GMFRS fire engines have now left the incident, the three Cheshire ones remain. Crews are continuing to damp down the trailer and the vehicles on it.

"Temperature readings are being taken using a thermal imaging camera and police and Highways are managing the traffic flow."

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "At 2.18pm this afternoon police were alerted to a car transporter on fire on the hard shoulder of the M6 northbound between J19 and J20.

"Recovery is at the scene and Highways England are managing closures which are currently lanes one and two of the carriageway."

All lanes of the M6 have now reopened.
