Mercedes Black Series Cars Will Be Back: 'It’s An Obligation'

The Black Series name left the Mercedes-Benz lineup in 2022 with the demise of the AMG GT sports car (RIP). For years, we’ve heard almost nothing from the brand about its once-beloved high-performance badge. Thankfully, though, new reports suggest that Black Series isn’t gone for good.

During a recent media call, as first reported by the British publication Evo, Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Schiebe confirmed that the Black Series name will return. Praise be.

Back in Black (Series)

According to Schiebe, "Black Series will definitely live on in the future. We have been very successful with it." He notes, "Black Series is such a strong brand, but it’s an obligation." He added that the automaker must create "really exciting brand shapers."

AMG enthusiasts should remember that previous Black Series models were defined by their powerful engines, aggressive aerodynamics, and extreme performance. That philosophy is expected to continue with this new generation of cars. As Schiebe put it: "It needs to be radical."

The revived Black Series will exist alongside Mercedes-AMG’s newer performance sub-brand, Mythos. Introduced in 2022, Mythos focuses on ultra-limited AMG models and one-offs rather than hardcore performance variants.

The big question is: When will the Black Series return? That remains unclear. However, with Mercedes recommitting to high-performance engines—particularly new V8s—hopefully we won’t have to wait long to see another Black Series model.

Motor1's Take: Long live the Black Series. Mercedes-AMG’s renewed commitment to the badge is great news for enthusiasts, especially fans of powerful combustion engines and extreme aerodynamics. With the brand recently backtracking on the four-cylinder C63, the timing couldn’t be better for a bold, high-performance comeback.
