Men seen brandishing pole covered in blood and broken bottle outside Leeds restaurant avoid jail

Two men have narrowly avoided a prison sentence after they were seen on CCTV brandishing a metal curtain pole covered in blood and a broken glass bottle.

Henock Hedagu, 22, and Henok Girmay, were both at the One Love restaurant in Roseville Road on October 3, 2020, when a fight broke out between a group of men. Hedagu was sat with the group and although Girmay was not with them, he was hit by a glass bottle, he said.

Leeds Crown Court heard on Wednesday that Hedagu was captured outside the restaurant on CCTV brandishing a metal pole and Girmay, 22, was seen breaking a glass bottle before both went back inside. Prosecutor Philip Standfast said: "Police were notified that there had been a disturbance. [On the CCTV] at 11.40pm, Hedagu was seen leaving the restaurant and walking to his car. He goes to the boot and returns to the entrance of the restaurant holding a pole and a glass bottle.
