Men in balaclavas hit woman with metal mallet in own home

Two men in balaclavas hit a woman with a metal mallet as they burgled her home.

John Wells, 37, of Liverpool City Centre, and Antony McVey, 32, of Clubmoor, were wearing balaclavas as they forced entry into a home near Horninglow Road, Burton, in Staffordshire.

After making their way inside the men came face-to-face with the owner of the home, and hit her on the shoulder with a metal mallet.

The men also smashed the woman's TV and a glass coffee table before leaving the home empty handed.

The victim did not require hospital treatment but was left shaken.

Detective Constable Lucy Spicer, the officer in charge of the case, said: “Wells and McVey caused significant emotional and physical distress to the victim in this case.

"I am happy with the sentences handed to the pair and would like to reiterate that the force will take all of the necessary steps to investigate and apprehend offenders who conspire to commit burglary.”

John Wells from Maritime Place, was sentenced to nine years behind bars with four years on licence after being found guilty of one count of aggravated burglary with intent.

Tony McVey, from Worcester Drive, was sentenced to eight years imprisonment with four years on licence after admitting charges of aggravated burglary with intent, affray and possession of a sharp pointed article in a public place.
