Men filmed brawling on street in chaotic scenes after football match

Video footage shows violent scenes breaking out between a group of men following a National League match between Southport and Chorley.

The match was hampered by multiple incidents of pyrotechnics being thrown in the stands and onto the pitch, with officers from Merseyside Police called to the stadium during the first half.

Two supporters were ejected from the match but problems escalated after the final whistle following Southport's 2-1 win. The violence hit a boiling point when men clashed outside Haig Avenue.

Videos of the incident have circulated on social media showing an ensuing melee with punches being thrown and men being dragged to the floor. Police have confirmed a 29-year-old man from Adlington, was arrested on suspicion of breach of the peace.

Southport FC has now released a statement in which they affirm their "commitment" to ensuring the "matchday experience is safe and enjoyable".

It said: "The letting off of pyrotechnics at games is not showing support for this club, it is actually doing the opposite as it could cost the club money in unwelcome fines which could be put to better use for such things as players or items to help improve the supporter experience on match days.

"To further safeguard all who attend any event at Haig Avenue, we welcome the receipt of any information which will assist us to deter, apprehend, detain and, where appropriate, prosecute anyone in possession of, or found discharging or being a party to the discharge of, such a device."

Community Policing Sergeant Andy Dentith said: "These were unpleasant scenes in full view of local residents and innocent match-goers, none of whom should have to experience such aggression, which clubs work so hard to eradicate from our sports grounds, and whose stewards do so much good work to minimise such issues."
