Men are also juggling jobs, childcare and housework

In response to your letter on juggling jobs and childcare (14 March), I strongly oppose the idea that women are the only ones juggling the demanding world of simultaneous childcare and careers. I have a demanding job, but work from home, so I’m the one receiving or picking up our kids in the afternoon, prepping dinner, and twice weekly caring for our three children – four years old and under – for the entire evening.

My wife owns a business and is trying to establish herself in the community, and this takes a lot of hours to accomplish. As a result, I also take on the brunt of household chores including dishes, garbage, vacuuming, laundry and all the outdoor work. The idea that women are the only ones in these trenches is no longer true. I support my wife to be successful in her role, but it means sacrifices for me as well. Don’t forget I too need to excel at my role despite these added layers of responsibility.
