Memphis Depay issues emphatic reply to Premier League transfer interest

Memphis Depay says he wants to stay at Barcelona for "several years" amid reported interest from a number of Premier League clubs.

The Dutchman has been linked with a return to the top tier of English football after scoring 11 goals in 24 appearances for the Catalan giants since joining from Lyon last summer. He has not quite reached the heights expected of him but still boasts a decent record in Spain.

But Depay has declared he wants to stay at Barcelona and has no plans to depart. He said: "I came here at Barcelona with the desire to play for the team - and of course I want to feel important here for several years."

With Depay's contract set to expire in June 2023, Barcelona could decide to cash in on Depay despite only signing just under a year ago. The 28-year-old, who joined the club as a free agent, has found his game time limited following the arrival of Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang in January.

The Gabon international has netted 11 times in 19 appearances after joining from Arsenal, with Ferran Torres and Ousmane Dembele making up the front three. However, Depay returned to the starting XI for the visit of Real Mallorca on Sunday, where he scored in a 2-1 win at Camp Nou.

It has been claimed that Depay has been 'approached' by Premier League clubs in the past few weeks. But it is understood that nothing has advanced in regards to his future and whether he could be in line to leave Barca at the end of the season.

Should Arsenal sign Memphis Depay this summer? Let us know in the comments below!

Whilst no teams have been named as making approaches for Depay, rumours have suggested Arsenal could be one of those keen. The Gunners are searching for a new striker in the summer with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah both out of contract, leaving the club without a senior forward on their books.

Lautaro Martinez and Victor Osimhen have also been linked with a move to Emirates Stadium as Mikel Arteta tries to strengthen their attacking options. Another potential reason for Depay to join Arsenal is that the club are in pole position to qualify for the Champions League.

They currently sit in fourth and are two points ahead of north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur with four games to go. Meanwhile, West Ham United and Chelsea have been tipped to sign another forward this summer.
