Meloni surpasses Berlusconi as longest-serving Italian PM for 80 years

  • Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has set a new political record by leading the longest-serving uninterrupted government in Italy since World War Two, surpassing the previous record of 1,412 days set by Silvio Berlusconi in 2005.
  • Meloni, who became Rome's first female prime minister in October 2022, heads a right-wing coalition comprising Brothers of Italy, the League, and Forza Italia, and has softened her previous far-right populist stance while in office.

  • Despite once being labelled the 'Trump Whisperer', Meloni has recently engaged in public spats with US President Donald Trump over military airbase usage and his criticisms of the Pope.
  • In a bid to maintain political stability ahead of the 2027 parliamentary elections, her ruling coalition is advancing a controversial electoral reform bill that guarantees a parliamentary majority to any political bloc winning over 42 per cent of the vote.
