Police are investigating a warehouse fire in West Melbourne which led to 150 people being evacuated from an apartment complex in the middle of the night.
Fire Rescue Victoria found the warehouse “fully involved with fire” after being called to the incident on Spencer Street early on Saturday.
The response, involving about 60 firefighters, as well as specialist firefighting appliances including aerial platforms, contained the fire to the warehouse and stopped it spreading.
Victoria police said they believed the building was empty at the time of the fire.
A community warning was issued for smoke and police officers evacuated approximately 150 people from a nearby high-rise apartment block as a precaution.
Residents were able to return home about 4.20am when the fire was brought under control. Police said no injuries were reported.
Police said a crime scene has been established.
“The investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing and at this stage it is unclear if the cause of the fire is suspicious,” police said.
