A coronial inquest into the death of a Melbourne socialite has not been able to identify the circumstances of her killing.
The body of Jeanette Moss, 69, was found by a friend in her Middle Park apartment in 2014.
Police say her killer was either unexpected or was someone she knew well and trusted.
The coronial report handed down on Tuesday ruled that neck compression was the cause of death.
State coroner John Cain said Ms Moss's death was "violent", and she was killed by "person or persons unknown".
Judge Cain said the police investigation had been thorough.
"In light of this extensive investigation, I am satisfied that no investigation which I am empowered to undertake, would be likely to result in the identification of the person or persons who caused Ms Moss's death," he said.
The report revealed that police had interviewed approximately 31 persons of interest, but no one had been charged.
Police found no sign of forced entry into the apartment nor any unwanted disturbance.
At the scene on the kitchen bench was a half-empty bottle of wine and two empty beer stubbies. Two wine glasses were in the dishwasher.
On the day of her death — January 14, 2014 — Ms Moss attended the Genesis Fitness Centre with a friend, before they went to Coles and the Melbourne Bakehouse together. She then drove her friend home.
Later, she made a call to another friend, Pauline Byrne, to arrange for Ms Byrne to take her to a medical appointment at the Alfred Hospital the following day.
In 2012, Ms Moss was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis and was told she had three to five years left to live. She underwent check-ups at the Alfred Hospital every three months.
The following day, Ms Byrne drove to Ms Moss's apartment to pick her up.
When Ms Moss did not answer the phone, Ms Byrne used a secret key to enter the apartment, only to discover Ms Moss's body in the spare bedroom.
She was found wearing the same clothing that she had worn to the gym.
Phone records showed the final call Ms Moss made was to the Melbourne Racing Club. A call was subsequently made to her mobile, then two to her landline, all of which were unanswered.
The coroner's report stated that she died some time after her call to the racing club and before the call to her landline.
