Melanie Chisholm has revealed she was almost kicked out of the Spice Girls following a spat with Victoria Beckham at an awards show.
The 48-year-old singer – better known as Mel C – appeared on Australia’s The Project on Tuesday where she discussed her new autobiography Who I Am. In the interview, Mel discussed the “love affair” with her friends and former bandmates, saying while they “adore each other,” they can also “drive each other nuts.”
As with any close-knit group, Mel said “little frustrations” began to appear during the band’s early days, with one tense incident occurring before the girls had even released their first single. She said: “We were at the Brits in ’96, and it was before Wannabe was released and we’d had a few drinks, as one does – or one did at the Brits ‘cause it was raucous in the ‘90s.

“I swore at Victoria Beckham and was pulled up on it the next day – pulled up for my behaviour – and was threatened to be kicked out of the band. So that completely floored me and it just started this really controlling behavior, of myself and my actions.”
Mel – also known as Sporty Spice – shared details of her battle with self-control which exacerbated an eating disorder she had developed at performing arts school and continued into her solo career. She said she became “very self-critical” about her weight and had concerns she may not “look the part” to be in the band, despite being confident in her abilities as a singer and dancer.
Later in the interview, Mel discussed her romance with Robbie Williams, admitting he “wasn’t lovely” to her during their “brief fling” in 1997. Mel has said she was left heartbroken after being led on and “abruptly dropped” by the former Take That star.
Admitting Robbie “knows he wasn’t lovely” towards the end of their romance, she said: “He has apologised to me and a lot of water has gone under the bridge and we're absolutely fine and have been for many, many years.”
Mel laughed as she revealed she has a concert scheduled in a few weeks with the former X Factor judge, and joked she may have to urge him to read the chapter in her book which addresses their relationship. Last week, Mel revealed she was sexually assaulted the night before her Spice Girls debut during a hotel massage, an incident which left her feeling “violated, vulnerable and embarrassed.”
