That knee injury for Mekhi Becton that we believed was nothing very serious now may actually be serious, after all.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports Becton’s knee injury Monday is a new injury and unrelated to his previous knee injury. Garafolo says Becton has “additional medical appointments tomorrow to get more clarity”.
#Jets OT Mekhi Becton’s knee injury is more concerning than the team originally believed following practice today, sources tell me and @RapSheet. It’s a new injury and unrelated to his previous knee injury. Becton has additional medical appointments tomorrow to get more clarity.

The initial thought after practice was that Becton would be fine and this would be a minor injury. But as Connor Hughes of SNY tweeted, “the previous optimism is gone.”

The Jets expect to find out more tonight, but the previous optimism is gone.

It was already noted earlier Monday that Becton would undergo an MRI. As Hughes reports, the MRI showed the injury was worse than doctors feared. The Jets signed veteran OL Caleb Benenoch early Monday evening and are still keeping an eye on free agent Duane Brown, who was in town for the Jets’ scrimmage on Saturday.
The initial report doctors gave Robert Saleh as he walked off the field was much more promising — no structural damage. Sources said there was enough optimism that Becton hadn't even suffered a sprain.
Then came MRI, which was worse than doctors feared. More tests scheduled.

It’s a very unfortunate turn of events for Becton, who had been having a nice camp in the hopes of bouncing back after missing almost all of 2021. He’ll undergo more tests, but it now seems it’s time to prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.
