Mehidy named Bangladesh captain for West Indies ODIs in Shanto's absence

NEW DELHI: Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been named Bangladesh’s captain for the upcoming West Indies ODIs, following the absence of regular captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.

Mehidy will captain Bangladesh for the first time in ODIs, as Shanto is still recovering from a groin injury, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced.

The three-match ODI series against West Indies is scheduled to start on December 8 in Saint Kitts.

Middle-order batter Towhid Hridoy has also been declared unavailable by the BCB’s medical team due to ongoing groin issues.

“Hridoy had complained of pain in his right groin region and subsequent investigations have confirmed the presence of a medical condition. He has been advised rest and we will reassess him in two weeks to determine his readiness to play," BCB's Sports Physician Monzur Hossain Chowdhury said in a statement.

Experienced all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was absent from the squad following his non-participation in both the farewell Test series against South Africa and the home ODI series versus Afghanistan.

The ODI squad saw the return of wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das, alongside Parvez Hossain Emon, Hasan Mahmud and Tanzim Hasan Sakib. Notably, Parvez's previous selection was in 2021 against West Indies, though he remained unused throughout that series.

Left-handed batsman Afif Hossain Dhrubo has earned a recall to the ODI squad after a year's absence. His last ODI appearance for Bangladesh was in December 2023.

Fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman opted out of the tour to stay with his wife, who is expecting their first child in December.

Bangladesh ODI squad: Mehidy Hasan Miraz (Captain), Litton Das (WK), Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Soumya Sarkar, Parvez Hossain Emon, Md Mahmudullah, Jaker Ali Anik, Afif Hossain Dhrubo, Rishad Hossain, Nasum Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Nahid Rana.
