Meghan reaches out to estranged father after leg amputation

The Duchess of Sussex has reached out to her estranged father, Thomas Markle, after reports he has had his leg amputated following surgery.

The approach comes after Mr Markle was rushed to hospital in the Philippines, despite the pair not speaking since 2018.

A spokesman for Meghan said: "I can confirm she has reached out to her father."

No further details have been released, including whether or not Meghan’s attempt was successful.

Mr Markle, 81, rushed to hospital in the Philippines on Tuesday, with his left leg then being amputated below the knee after his foot turned black.

His son, Thomas Jr, said: “There was no option. I was told the leg had to be removed and it was a case of life or death.

“My dad is being very brave. His foot turned blue and then black. It happened very quickly. I took him to a local hospital and they did some scans and an ultrasound and said the leg had to be amputated.”

Mr Markle, who lived in Mexico for a decade before relocating to the Philippines in January, has faced a series of health problems in recent years, including a stroke and multiple heart attacks.

Mr Markle has been estranged from his daughter since Harry and Meghan’s wedding, when Mr Markle was found to have colluded with photographers who paid him for photos.

The fallout saw him pull out of his daughter's wedding just days before the ceremony, with King Charles III, then the Prince of Wales, walking Meghan down the aisle instead.

Meghan has never resumed any proper relationship with her father following her marriage, with Mr Markle not believed to have met Harry and Meghan's children, Archie and Lilibet.

Before marrying into the royal family, Meghan called herself a “daddy’s girl”, writing how her father had invested “blood, sweat and tears” so she could pursue her dreams.

But the duchess won a High Court privacy and copyright claim against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) over articles that reproduced parts of a “personal and private” handwritten letter she wrote to Mr Markle in a bid to get him to stop talking to the press.

Mr Markle has been critical of his daughter and son-in-law's decision to step back from public duty in the UK and criticise the royal family, saying: “She is not the person I knew as my daughter.”

He added: "I think they're both turning into lost souls at this point."
