Meghan Markle has received birthday wishes from a number of royals, including Kate and William in a move that could be considered a gesture of goodwill.
The two shared a message to their sister-in-law on Twitter, with a photo of Meghan at St Paul's Cathedral. The photo was taken at the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, which took place in June, reports the Express.
The tweet read: "Wishing a happy birthday to The Duchess of Sussex!"
It was reported in the past that Meghan and Kate had a bumpy relationship, with reports that Kate was left “sobbing” during an argument ahead of her 2018 wedding. Meghan said "the reverse happened" in her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Since then she has said that there "wasn’t a confrontation" and an apology had been made. This has left some online thinking that the birthday message is an olive branch from Kate and William
The snap marked the Duchess of Sussex' first and only official appearance in the UK during the long bank holiday weekend of celebrations. While both the Cambridges and the Sussexes attended the service, the public didn't see either the brothers or the sisters-in-law interact with one another.
The seating arrangement followed the pecking order, which meant Meghan and Harry had to seat in the second row, far from Kate and William. A few minutes after the message shared by the @KensingtonRoyal account, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, also tweeted their birthday wishes for Meghan.
In a post very similar to the one published by Kate and William, the future King and his wife wrote: "Happy birthday to The Duchess of Sussex!"
Kate and William's message came as the rift between the Sussexes and the rest of the Firm is still believed to be wide.
Meghan and Harry have established a new life for themselves in the celebrity enclave of Montecito in California, buying a multimillion-pound home and launching a non-profit foundation, after stepping down as working royals for financial freedom.
Some described the message as a "classy" move. Praising the Cambridges, one Twitter user wrote: "William and Catherine always take the high road. Always choose to be graceful and classy. Incredible."
Other social media users appeared to be less impressed by Kate and William's post, with one saying: "Seriously?? Wow. No words." Another pointed out: "It's protocol. Damned if they do damned if they don't."
One other user tweeted: "....and people wonder why they moved to America, SMH. Happy birthday Meghan."
