The infamous row between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton during a bridesmaid dress fitting has once again hit the headlines. Previously, it was reported that Kate was left “sobbing” during the tense argument ahead of the Duchess of Sussex’s wedding day in May 2018.
Then during her interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan said “the reverse happened” and she was left weeping just a few days before her nuptials to Prince Harry. In an attempt to clear the air, Meghan said that there “wasn’t a confrontation” and an apology had been made, reports Mirror Online.
Now in Tom Bower’s sensational new book, he has included new details about the bust-up between the two - and how it soured their bond. Princess Charlotte was one of the flower girls alongside Meghan’s goddaughters Rylan and Remi Litt, best friend Jessica Mulroney’s daughter Ivy and Prince Harry’s goddaughters Zalie Warren and Florence van Cutsem.
In Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors, Bower reports that the trouble started when Kate arrived with Charlotte, then three, for the fitting.
At the time, he claims Kate was already irritated by complaints Meghan was allegedly bullying her staff - accusations she has always strenuously denied. Since she had just given birth to Prince Louis, she was too tired to "cope with a disagreement about whether the bridesmaids should wear tights."
Kate thought they should, in line with protocol, Meghan and her close friend Jessica Mulroney disagreed. While this point of contention was known, Tom Bower claims the pair then had another argument - as Kate thought Charlotte’s dress was too short, and did not fit.
But Meghan reportedly rejected this - and this led Kate to believe that this "confirmed the complaints by Toubati and other members of staff about Meghan," Bower writes.
"Kate burst into tears," the book reads. "Kirstie Allsopp, a friend of Camilla, would later confirm that Kate was reduced to tears by Meghan bullying her staff.
"After leaving that unhappy scene Kate decided to make amends. She crossed the Kensington Palace corridor and presented Meghan with a bunch of flowers. Kate also told Meghan not to speak rudely to her staff. ‘That’s unacceptable.’
"What followed can never be irrefutably established. In Kate’s version, Meghan slammed the door in her face and threw the flowers in a dustbin. Meghan would tell Oprah Winfrey that the tears were shed by her, not Kate, and the flowers were an apology. ‘I think that’s where everything changed,’ Meghan rightly said.”
In Finding Freedom, the 2020 book about the royals by Meghan’s pal Omid Scobie, and Carolyn Durand, the rumours that Meghan made Kate cry were dismissed.
A source who was allegedly at the fitting said: “Some of the children weren’t co-operating. There were no tears from anyone. Kate and Meghan were both a little stressed but professional in the room.”
During Meghan and Harry’s tell-all interview which airs tonight on ITV, the Duchess of Sussex told chat show queen Oprah that she was the one crying.
When asked if there was a situation where Kate cried, Meghan explained that “the reverse happened” during a tough wedding week.
“A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something pertaining -yes, the issue was correct -about flower girl dresses, and it made me cry, and it really hurt my feelings,” said Meghan.
Meghan was shocked that what she believes was the “reverse” of what happened went public, leaving her being blamed for a situation that she wasn’t responsible for and happened to her.
“Everyone in the institution knew it wasn’t true. I am not sharing that piece about Kate to be in any way disparaging about her. I would hope that she would want that to be corrected,” added Meghan.
When Oprah tried to get more information, Meghan stated it would not be fair to go into further details as Kate had apologised.
She told Oprah that Kate did attempt to build bridges and sent a peace offering to try and smooth things over.
Meghan explained: “And she brought me flowers and a note, apologising. And she did what I would do if I knew that I hurt someone, right, to just take accountability for it.’
