Lovers of hot sauce have been dealt with a blow with the world facing a Sriracha shortage over the summer. Huy Fong Foods, the makers of the sauce, says a shortage of chili peppers is to blame.
A drought in Mexico has disrupted the supply, part of a decades-long 'megadrought' made worse by climate change. Huy Fong Foods now says the orders placed after mid-April will be on hold until after September 6.
In a letter, the company says the shortage was due to “weather conditions." “Unfortunately, this is out of our control and without this essential ingredient we are unable to produce any of our products,” the letter reads.
In addition to Sriracha, the company says it also faces shortages of two other spicy sauces, sambal oelek and chili garlic.
