Megabus slashes routes across England and Wales

Megabus is saying goodbye to a number of routes -

Megabus has announced it is slashing routes across England and Wales.

The coach operator, which provides intercity trips for as little as £1, has said demand for its routes has failed to recover following the Covid pandemic.

But Megabus said it would continue to operate its routes in Scotland and all cross-border services between Scotland, England and Wales, reports Route One.

These routes will still provide links between cities such as Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield and London.

A bus route between Bristol and Plymouth will also continue but all other routes will be cut due to the “low passenger demand”.

The changes to routes are expected to come into effect on December 4.

Megabus managing director Simone Walsh described the move as “extremely difficult,” adding “it is not sustainable for us to continue operating our current network as the customer demand is simply too low.”

She explained the decision to cut services will ensure Megabus has “a more efficient network going forward”.

Ms Walsh added: “We want to thank the many passengers who travel with us every day and will ensure that we continue to operate an affordable and high-quality service on the parts of the network that are unaffected by these changes.”

The group said it anticipated that “a small number of positions will be impacted” by the changes and explained it is in consultation with staff.

The company added that arrangements would be put in place for customers who had already booked tickets to ensure they could find alternative transport or be provided with a refund.

Megabus was founded by Scottish businessman Sir Brian Souter in 2003 and its network once linked more than 100 locations across the UK.

It carries more than four million passengers a year.
