Mega play, Parva, in Dharwad next month

An eight-hour-long Kannada play, Parva, based on writer S.L. Bhyrappa’s prominent work of literature [Parva] will be staged in Dharwad on April 12 and 13.

Addressing presspersons in Dharwad on Wednesday, Director of Mysuru Rangayana Addanda C. Cariappa said that Byrappa’s novel [Parva] is a re-creation of the epic, the Mahabharata, and a mixture of history and mythology.

The work has already been translated in many Indian languages and it is in the process of being translated into a few foreign languages also, he said.

Mr. Cariappa said that the 600-page novel has been dramatised and directed by Prakash Belawadi and a 50-member troupe has rehearsed for six months to get the play ready for stage. It will be a milestone in the history of Kannada theatre, he said.

He said that the Department of Kannada and Culture has released ₹50 lakh for the play of which ₹38 lakh has been paid as remuneration to theatre artistes. Keeping in mind the duration of the play and the expenses involved in staging such a mega play, tickets have been priced at ₹200 each, he said.

On the occasion, pamphlets of the mega play and handbook was released.

Assistant Director of Kannada and Culture Kumar Bekkeri and Senior Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations Manjunath Dollin were present.
