Mega Millions' $1.13 billion jackpot has a winner, its website shows, after someone bought the winning ticket in New Jersey.
The jackpot had been growing since early December, as it's the case when there are no winners in each one of the drawings. This was the 31st drawing, not entirely surprising given the fact that the odds of getting all of Mega Millions' six numbers right is one in more than 300 million.
Mega Millions said in a statement that only four previous jackpots have been higher than this one, "including the game's current record prize of $1.602 billion, won in Florida last August 8."
"This is exciting news, not just for our players, but also for lottery-funded beneficiary programs in each jurisdiction," said Georgia Lottery President and CEO Gretchen Corbin, lead director of the Mega Millions Consortium.
The jackpot has now reset to its initial amount, $20 million.
Even though the prize for this lottery has dropped, the other large lottery being played in the country, Powerball, is still amassing a prize that is in the hundreds of millions. Following a new drawing on Monday, its prize now amounts to $865 million.
Before Tuesday's winner, both lotteries had a combined prize of almost $2 billion, the first time they offered such a high amount. Powerball players have a one in 292.2 million chance of winning the jackpot.
