Meet the stranded travellers paying thousands to get home amid Middle East crisis

  • British holidaymakers are facing significant disruption and high costs to return home due to the closure of Gulf airspace, affecting thousands of travellers.
  • Gill and Alf Oliver from Leicestershire spent nearly £10,000 on alternative flights from Sydney to the UK, having to travel via the US after their Qatar Airways and British Airways flights were grounded.
  • Angela Mayhew and Sue Tannock from Shropshire paid almost £700 each for new flights from Sydney to the UK via China after their Emirates flight was cancelled, leaving them stranded for days.
  • Keith and Jan Wood from Northern Ireland are also among those stranded in Sydney, awaiting confirmation of new flights and accommodation to get back to Dublin.
  • While some flights have started departing from Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Qatar Airways services from Doha remain suspended, with the situation expected to worsen for many before normal operations are fully restored.
