THE highly anticipated animated version of The Cat in the Hat is set to feature a soundtrack by an acclaimed Scottish composer.
Grammy winning and Emmy and BAFTA-nominated composer Lorne Balfe composed the original score for the film, which is set for a global theatrical release in November.
Balfe was born in Inverness, going on to become the youngest percussionist in the Edinburgh Symphony Orchestra before moving to the United States to pursue his career.
Since then he has found major success, with credits including: Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Top Gun: Maverick, Black Widow, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and The LEGO Batman Movie.
He has now turned his attention to assisting in the re-imagining of the Dr Seuss classic, The Cat in the Hat, bringing his expansive experience across blockbuster filmmaking, television and gaming to the production.
Speaking about his involvement, Balfe said: “Bringing back the world of Doctor Seuss, alone, is a good enough reason to want to be involved."
"Family entertainment in the cinema is very important to me and the fact that The Cat in the Hat is so legendary, makes being a part of the project special.”
The score is described as reflecting a dynamic and playful musical direction, marking a distinctive departure from some of Balfe’s previous action-driven work.
The recording sessions involved bringing together an orchestra of 124 musicians to the famous Abbey Road recording Studios.
Speaking about the sessions, Balfe said: “The fact that we had the largest orchestra recorded at Abbey Road was wonderful, as was working with some of the best musicians."
The Cat in the Hat is slated for a theatrical release from November 6 2026, with further details to be announced.
