Meet the 2024 Paris Olympics mascot: What the heck is a Phryge?

Weird Olympic mascots are nothing new — just check out our ranking of the most bizarre ones for proof.

So say hello to the 2024 Paris Olympics mascots. They’re known as Les Phryges, and you’re going to see a lot of them in France, from opening ceremony to gift shops.

And if you’re here, you might be wondering what a Phryge is! We have an answer.

Back during the French Revolution, the rebels wore certain hats. Those hats? Yep. They’re known as Phrygian caps or Les Phryges. As the Olympics’ site said: “The Phrygians have stood shoulder to shoulder with the French people throughout all the key moments in the nation’s history; today, they are convinced that sport can change everything! With the Phryges, let’s drive a revolution through sport!”
