Isaac Westendorf may not have scored but he knew his responsibility as a Newcastle United number nine when it comes to a Tyne-Wear derby. The striker was at the centre of celebrations in front of the Sunderland fans sat high in the corner of the Leazes End after Joe White's opening goal in the U21s clash on Monday night.
It was the Black Cats who enjoyed the last laugh however, with goalkeeper Alex Bass netting a controversial injury-time equaliser to snatch a 1-1 draw at St James' Park. For Bremen-born Westendorf, it was a first taste of the famous North East rivalry and the 21-year-old admits he relished the battle.
He told ChronicleLive: "When Joe scored, it was crazy. When I joined, the first thing I was told is you're here now, you can't support Sunderland. I was ready for it, I'm getting there as a Geordie.
