A 94-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh has captured public attention after giving up her US citizenship and seeking to regain Indian citizenship, saying her final wish is to spend her remaining years in her homeland and "die as an Indian."
Kondragunta Mahalakshmamma, a native of Chinthagumpala village in Chinaganjam mandal of Bapatla district, recently approached district authorities with an emotional appeal to expedite her citizenship application. A video of her meeting officials has since gone viral on social media.
Accompanied by her son, Buchaiah Choudhary, Mahalakshmamma met Bapatla District Collector J. Venkata Murali on Wednesday and requested that her application for Indian citizenship be processed at the earliest.
Mahalakshmamma moved to Petersburg, Virginia, in the United States after the death of her husband, Nagabhushanam. She went there to live with her son, an oncologist, and became a US citizen in July 2000. She spent nearly 18 years in the United States before returning to India in 2018.
