Meet Kanak Agrawal: The IIT Graduate Who Chose Peace Over Prestige

Kanak Agrawal graduated from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and began her career at McKinsey & Company in Gurgaon, following a path that seemed almost pre-decided given her upbringing near Kota, where IIT preparation dominates life, and with her brother already having taken the same route, she simply followed along, later admitting that it never truly felt like a conscious choice of her own.

After her time at McKinsey, she went on to co-found a startup with friends and dedicated five years to building it, achieving what many would consider success, yet despite things going well externally, she felt a persistent lack of fulfillment, realizing that neither her corporate job nor her entrepreneurial journey felt truly aligned with who she was or what she wanted from life.

At the age of 31, Kanak made the bold decision to walk away from both her job and her startup, not out of failure but out of clarity, as she recognized that she had been living according to expectations rather than personal desire, and chose instead to reclaim ownership of her life and choices.

Today, she lives in the peaceful hills of Himachal Pradesh, where her daily routine reflects a slower and more intentional lifestyle, beginning her mornings without rush, spending time journaling, cooking fresh meals, and allowing space for hobbies, relationships, and rest, a stark contrast to her earlier life filled with anxiety, deadlines, and a constant sense of something pending.

Kanak now earns through travel content creation, ghostwriting, and hosting slow-living retreats, and has spent the past four years backpacking across India and abroad, embracing a life that prioritizes flexibility and personal fulfillment over financial gain, and while her income is significantly lower than during her corporate years, she finds a deeper sense of happiness in the fact that this life finally feels like her own.

Her journey, however, has not been without its challenges, as her parents were initially shocked by her decisions and continue to struggle with understanding her unconventional path, often encouraging stability and traditional milestones, though they ultimately respect her independence and allow her the space to live life on her own terms.

Kanak openly acknowledges that this lifestyle lacks the structure, security, and safety nets of a corporate career, requiring significant mental strength and self-discipline, but she also emphasizes that it leads to profound personal growth, as it forces one to take full responsibility for every aspect of life and to make deliberate, conscious choices every single day.

For years, she followed a script shaped by societal expectations, but today she embraces uncertainty as a conscious decision rather than a burden, finding empowerment in the fact that every choice she makes now is truly hers, and in that realization lies a different, deeply personal definition of success that prioritizes authenticity over achievement.
