Villagers in Cossall say they support improvements to ‘medieval’ through roads where ‘traffic is getting worse’. In March Cossall Parish Council submitted its Cossall Neighbourhood Plan to Broxtowe Borough Council, now a consultation period for the plan is in place from May 30 until July 14 this year over the recommendations made in the plan.
One of the key items within the neighbourhood plan proposes to reduce the impact of road traffic on residents and property by seeking design solutions to slow the traffic, increase pedestrian safety and reduce the volume of through traffic cutting through Cossall.
The plan states that the majority of roads in Cossall are through roads connecting Cossall to Ilkeston and the adjoining Parishes of Awsworth and Trowell. It describes Cossall Road, Dead Lane to Church Lane as ‘medieval in origin that has developed over many centuries and is not suited to the needs of modern traffic.’

“Traffic is getting worse, now, year on year it’s getting worse,” said Lewis Winter who owns Trinity Farm on Awsworth Lane.
The 62-year-old said: “We fought for traffic measures for years, then they bought the bypass at the time it did the trick since the roads have gotten busier. In Cossall village they put ramps through the village to slow down, they never put them up this road (Awsworth Lane).
“The roads are alright, it’s a village so you don’t expect a dual carriage way. There needs to be some traffic calming. How is this road going to cope when they put so many hundreds of houses?”
Mr Winter referred to nearby plans for a £58m development of 250 homes to be delivered by housebuilders Avant Homes after they have purchased 25-acres of land on Shilo Way in Awsworth.
Another villager who wished to remain anonymous said: “I support any new measures, I think it’s important we keep improving the area in any way. There can be a lot of traffic in and out of the village and people cutting through. We are right near Ilkeston, the retail park and busy roads so people sometimes just fly through.
“Near Church Lane and that end of the village those roads can be very narrow. I have definitely noticed more traffic in the area over the years.”
“It is needed, the roads can’t handle all this extra traffic,” said 54-year-old Jackie Fowler.
“There’s the bypass but people still cut through Awsworth and Cossall. It sometimes worries me the speeds people go, it’s ridiculous.
“I’m all for pedestrian safety, there’s lovely walks around here so when the suns out a lot of people are out and about. I think safety is probably a priority.”
