Alcoholics receiving treatment at one Manchester mental health trust will be given ketamine as part of a trial to see if it reduces alcohol dependency.
Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Trust is one of seven sites across the country set to be treating alcoholics with ketamine-assisted therapy as part of a £2.4 million phase three trial. It comes after a phase two trial showed ketamine and therapy treatment was safe and tolerable for heavy drinkers.
Ketamine is a licensed medical drug, widely used as an anaesthetic and in pain relief, but is also used recreationally, and is classed by the Home Office as a Class B drug.
