Meat Loaf had been 'seriously ill' with Covid before his death, according to reports

Music legend Meat Loaf had been 'seriously ill' with Covid before his death, according to reports in the US.

The death of the 74-year-old American singer of hits such as Bat Out of Hell and I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That) was announced this morning.

Sources have claimed to TMZ that the star passed away on Thursday night after contracting the viral disease.

Although it was suggested he had "outspoken" views regarding the ongoing pandemic, it is not known whether the singer was vaccinated.

According to TMZ, Meat Loaf - real name Marvin Lee Aday - had been due to attend a dinner earlier this week regarding a show he was working on but cancelled when he became "seriously ill" with coronavirus

Sources added his battle "quickly became critical" before the singer passed away surrounded by his family.

They also suggested to TMZ that the late star was outspoken regarding issues linked to the pandemic - claiming the late star had been "railing with folks in Australia recently about vaccine mandates".

Meat Loaf had a career spanning more than six decades and during that time sold over 100 million albums worldwide and starred in some 65 movies.

The star's wife released a statement via Facebook on Friday morning confirming his death.

"Our hearts are broken to announce that the incomparable Meat Loaf passed away tonight with his wife Deborah by his side," the emotional tribute read.

"We know how much he meant to so many of you and we truly appreciate all of the love and support as we move through this time of grief in losing such an inspiring artist and beautiful man."

It added that his daughters, Pearl and Amanda, “and close friends have been with him throughout the last 24 hours”.

The post said: “His amazing career spanned 6 decades that saw him sell over 100 million albums worldwide and star in over 65 movies, including Fight Club, Focus, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Wayne’s World. Bat Out of Hell remains one of the top 10 selling albums of all time.

“We know how much he meant to so many of you and we truly appreciate all of the love and support as we move through this time of grief in losing such an inspiring artist and beautiful man. We thank you for your understanding of our need for privacy at this time.

“From his heart to your souls… don’t ever stop rocking!”
