Essendon have put the ball firmly in James Hird's court regarding a return to the AFL club as the Bombers attempt to deliver a united front under new coach Mark McVeigh.

McVeigh was appointed Essendon coach on Monday, with the club opting for the Sydney Swans assistant ahead of former teammate Hird, Fremantle's Jaymie Graham and Adelaide's Murray Davis.
