An Orlando woman caught the undivided attention of social media users when she posted how much she earned during her first 82 hours working at McDonald’s. The video quickly inspired many users to share their strong opinions about the current cost of living and the minimum wages people are expected to survive on.
In the original video, posted on TikTok under the username @iamjasminecherie, the creator wrote in the caption, in part, “laughing through my pain.” Jasmine speaks with uncertainty before finally revealing a paycheck for $1,128. She then laughs and says, “Okay! It’s not as low as I thought.”

Immediately, some users thought it must be a uniquely Floridian issue. One wrote, “Come to Massachusetts, you’ll make at least 2k working 82 hours and that’s after they take taxes out.” Another added, “I make $1,400 WITH a degree!” But one user offered a different perspective, writing a lengthy comment that said, in part, “I’ve been in business probably as long as you are old, but I had to bust my ass to get here. Keep doing what you’re doing and always remember, $1,100 beats $0 every day and every hour of the week. And I know you young people have social media, but it’s not wise to share your earnings with strangers. Best wishes to you.”
The base minimum wage in Florida is set to increase
Over the years, social media has become a platform where people openly share their salaries from major companies. There are two main reasons this trend has emerged. First, people are sharing tips on how to climb the corporate ladder. Second, people are trying to organize and figure out whether they are the only ones struggling with pay they believe is too low from highly profitable companies.
According to OnPay, the base minimum wage for McDonald’s employees in Florida is $14 per hour, which aligns with what Jasmine ended up earning after 82 hours of work at the chain. However, the outlet also notes that beginning in September 2026, that minimum will increase to $15 under changing state law.
There can still be some variation from store to store across the state. Up to 90% of McDonald’s locations are independently owned rather than corporate-owned, meaning franchise owners can choose to pay more than the state-mandated minimum wage.

According to the Florida Phoenix, McDonald’s workers in Orlando and Miami joined the “Fight for $15” protests in 2019. At the time, Florida’s minimum wage was reportedly $8.46 per hour. State law has gradually increased that wage over the past seven years until finally reaching the $15 target. Those protests ultimately led to companies such as Target, Amazon, and Disney raising their minimum wages to meet those demands.
McDonald’s, however, made no such promises or guarantees — and years later, the issue is clearly still stirring debate among Americans. In the comments on her original post, Jasmine said she is a single mother who is simply trying to make a living and support her children. Perhaps it is those very human ambitions that helped the video reach 4.5 million views. After all, almost everyone can relate to trying to provide for their family.
