McDonald's has hiked the price of five popular items from today

Fast food giant McDonald's is raising the price of five much-loved items due to the worsening cost of living crisis sweeping across the country.

Consumers visiting one of the more than 1,200 stores across the country will have to pay more for some items that used to be thought of as cheap options, including the previously-99p Mayo Chicken. The fast food chain has said the price hike has been driven up by rising food and energy prices "like many other businesses".

It's important to note that prices may vary across different restaurants due to some being operated by a franchise. While the company can recommend how prices should be set, the final decision is up to the franchise itself.

Speaking to the Mirror, a McDonald's spokesperson said: "We are committed to offering great tasting food at affordable prices. However, like many businesses, the impact of the increase in food and energy costs continues to affect our company and our franchisees."

"We carefully review and adjust pricing to offer great value and quality. At the same time, we continue to work hard on how we can provide our customer's value where it matters most, with personalised offers and rewards through the MyMcDonald’s Rewards scheme."

The following items will be affected by the price rise:

  • Mayo Chicken: 99p to £1.19 (up 20%)
  • Bacon Mayo Chicken: £1.59 to £1.79 (up 12.6%)
  • Bacon Double Cheeseburger: £2.49 to £2.69 (up 8%)
  • Triple Cheeseburger: £2.69 to £2.89 (up 7.4%)
  • Medium Fizzy Drink: £1.39 to £1.49 (up 7.1%)

It comes after McDonald's launched a trial of Saver Meals in 120 South East England locations. The trial will see the Cheeseburger and Mayo Chicken Saver Meals on sale for £3.99 while the Double Cheeseburger Saver Meal will be marked at £4.79.

The trial will run until Tuesday, May 9 - if it proves to be a success with customers, the fast food chain may rolle out the saver menu to locations nationwide.
