McDonald's fans rage as ban announced for all UK restaurants

The latest move by fast food giant McDonald's has left some fans fuming. It is axing plastic cutlery in all its UK restaurants and replacing them with paper ones.

Instantly taking to Twitter, one fan raged: "Paper straws are bad enough how do you eat with paper cutlery." The action will "remover over 850 tonnes of plastic", according to the food retailer.

Making the announcement, McDonald's confirmed to customers, via Twitter: "That's right, we're cancelling plastic cutlery and replacing it with a new sustainable, paper-based material in all of our restaurants in the UK & Ireland. We're doing this to remove over 850 tonnes of plastic from our supply chain a year, as part of our Plan for Change.

The new cutlery is made from renewable, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified pressed-paper. Birmingham Live reported that Nina Prichard, head of sustainable and ethical sourcing at McDonald's, said: "As a business, we're committed to taking action on packaging and waste and increasing our use of sustainable materials.

"We're pleased to announce another step forward in eliminating single-use plastics and it's great to be switching our famous McFlurry spoons to this new paper-based material." The move has NOT gone down well among punters.

Social media reacted to the news and views were split. One person said: "Eating with your hands would be more successful than paper cutlery. Their paper straws are beyond a joke and fall apart whilst using them. Just use a lid with a hole to sip your drinks instead. As for paper cutlery, I'd be more inclined to keep a proper set in the car if I knew the alternative was paper."

Another added: With the event of your paper straws - which are disgusting by the way - this is only going to end one way - BADLY. I applaud your global awareness for a sustainable future but when it affects your food and its taste and the way you eat - you could come up with a better idea."

Another Twitter user said: "Paper straws don’t work why should forks and knives- there’s a reason they use plastic," Someone else said: "Paper straws complete waste of time, paper n liquid don't mix."

The reaction continued: "Maccies using paper spoons as well as straws now is criminal". Another said: "Must abolish the paper straws. Ruined my entire day when i got 1 sip before it disintegrated."

However, not everyone was outraged. One Twitter user wrote: "It’s 2022, why wasn’t a change made before now?" Another highlighted another plastic issue saying: "Do something about the sauce pots too. I used to work in maccies and people always ask for extra (I'd give 1 but I'm tight) . Now I clean the services where the maccies is and the amount we throw unopened.... All because they wanted 5 or 6 pots".
