Mayorkas impeachment fails, border security remains a challenge

FILE PHOTO: FILE PHOTO: Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington

In recent developments, officials at the White House are claiming victory as the impeachment proceedings against Secretary Mayorkas have come to an abrupt halt. Officials have been vocal in their support for Mayorkas, asserting that he did nothing wrong. A White House official has stated that there is bipartisan agreement that this impeachment effort was baseless and unconstitutional.

Amidst these claims of victory, there seems to be a discrepancy between the statements made by officials at the White House, including the President, and Mayorkas' testimony before Congress. While officials acknowledge that there have been challenges at the border for years, Mayorkas insisted that the border is secure. This contradictory statement has raised concerns among Republicans, who believe it to be grounds for impeachment. However, the President stands by Mayorkas and believes his word regarding border security.

As for addressing the border situation, there are no current plans for the President to visit the border. It is worth noting that President Biden made a visit to the border last year, where he had the opportunity to witness firsthand the experiences and processes of Border Patrol agents, as well as the utilized technology.

In terms of negotiations regarding the border and related matters, President Biden is not directly involved. At present, he is attending closed-door fundraisers in New York, which has caused considerable traffic in the area. It appears that the President's attention is currently focused elsewhere, and he is not actively participating in discussions regarding how to proceed with border security.

House Republicans are being urged to abandon what is viewed as extreme political stunts, such as the failed impeachment attempt, and instead unite with the President, Secretary Mayorkas, and both parties to find real solutions that will effectively strengthen border security.

As the impeachment proceedings have fizzled out, the White House is taking this opportunity to emphasize the need for cooperation and collaboration in addressing the challenges at the border. By working together, officials hope to deliver tangible results and ensure a more secure border.
