The Mayor of Liverpool is to write to the energy regulator urging them to take action to “avert this cost of living catastrophe.”
Mayor Joanne Anderson said she is calling on leaders across the country to contact Ofgem in a bid to help residents facing rising energy bills. In a statement, Mayor Anderson said her administration at the Cunard Building will do “all we can” to protect people from hardship as tariffs continue to rise.
Ofgem has warned energy supplies could raise direct debits before the new cap on energy prices goes live in October, with households bracing for sharp rises in two months' time. Average bills are forecast to reach more than £4,000 by next year.
