May is just around the corner, and it looks packed with great video games to look forward to. The long-awaited sequel to one of the best games ever released will keep Switch owners busy for quite some time, while Xbox and PC gamers are getting a highly-anticipated co-op first-person shooter with vampires.
Strategy fans will be treated to a new Age of Wonders title, and a unique puzzle game − in which a dog herds human crowds to save them from falling into the abyss – is coming to PC and PlayStation, with support for VR headsets, including the PSVR2.
A Lord of the Rings game that got delayed several times is finally coming to most platforms, and a new augmented-reality pet game from the creators of Pokémon GO is due in May, too.
Plenty of titles to be excited about, so let’s have a look at the best games releasing in May 2023.
Redfall
Redfall is set in the eponymous fictional island town in Massachusetts, which has been invaded by hordes of vampires and isolated from the outside world. You and your friends are tasked with slaying the vampires and reclaiming the overrun town.
This first-person shooter game offers both a solo experience and a co-op mode for up to four players. Each hero has unique abilities and loadout, allowing for plenty of collaboration strategies to deal with the vampire threat.
Initially, the game was in development for the PlayStation 5, but following the acquisition of its publisher Bethesda by Microsoft two years ago, Redfall will be an Xbox and Windows PC exclusive.
Redfall releases on May 2 for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Age of Wonders 4
Age of Wonders is back with its signature blend of 4X real-time strategy and turn-based tactical battles. The fourth instalment in the long-running series is all about variety as you’ll be free to create and rule a fantasy faction of your own design.
The game gives you plenty of choices both during race creation and throughout your playthrough, allowing you to fine-tune the empire you’re building to the most minuscule of details.
AoW 4 comes with a very competent AI, and a new Pantheon system in which every game won or lost gives you XP, contributing to your overall progress and unlocking even more customisation options. You can read more about the game in our Age of Wonders 4 preview.
Age of Wonders 4 is coming on May 2 for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Peridot
Peridot is a new augmented reality game from the creators of Pokémon Go. It promises one-of-a-kind genetically unique pets for you to take care of.
You pet, play with and feed your magical creatures to help them grow, and take them out on walks in your neighborhood, meeting other players and breeding your Peridots to create even more unique pets.
Peridot is coming on May 9 for iOS and Android devices.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is finally coming, six years after the previous game’s release. As the follow-up of one of the best games of all time, Tears of the Kindom got some big hype to live up to, and from the early looks and gameplay showcases we’ve seen, it’s on the right track to deliver.
The familiar world of Hyrule we saw in Breath of the Wild has been expanded with new sky islands and other locations to explore, while Link will have new abilities, allowing you to fuse objects to make weapons more powerful, turn back time on objects, ascend and pass through terrain directly above you, and create contraptions and even vehicles to help you travel and explore.
Tears of the Kingdom is without a doubt the biggest release this May, and it seems packed with many more new features to uncover, which will keep players busy for a long time.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is coming on May 12, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
Miasma Chronicles
Miasma Chronicles is a turn-based RPG set in a post-apocalyptic version of the US. It’s a completely new story coming from the creators of Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden.
You control a small group of characters on a quest across America which has been turned into a toxic wasteland by a savage force known as the Miasma. The game mixes real-time exploration with turn-based combat with RPG elements.
Miasma Chronicles is a finely crafted experience with beautiful environments, characters with unique weapons and abilities you can upgrade, and a captivating story in which you uncover the mystery around the Miasma.
Miasma Chronicles arrives May 23 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun
A cool-looking boomer shooter set in the Warhammer 40k universe where you play as a Space Marine, Boltgun has you battle against Chaos Space Marines and daemons of Chaos.
The game’s aesthetic is heavily influenced by the retro first-person shooters of the ‘90s, such as Doom, but there are a lot of modern features, and the enemies are much smarter.
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun releases on May 23 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Switch.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum
After a number of delays, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum should be coming this May, as long as there isn’t a last-minute change of plans.
The game was first announced back in 2019 and, as the title suggests, you take the role of Gollum, aka Sméagol, in a stealth action-adventure set eight years before the War of the Ring we saw in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel and Peter Jackson’s movies.
Some were skeptical about the game’s premise last year, but as the release date is finally just around the corner, it will be interesting to see if climbing caves as the weirdest of ring bearers is actually worthwhile.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is slated for a May 25 release for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
System Shock
System Shock is a ground-up remake of the 1994 cult classic, which, together with its sequel, spawned a slew of spiritual successors, including Deus Ex, BioShock, and Prey.
System Shock is a first-person action-adventure shooter set on a space station in a cyberpunk version of the near future. You play as a hacker who tries to frustrate the plans of an evil AI.
System Shock releases for PC on May 30.
