Max Wober 'expressed wish' to join Leeds United as RB Salzburg search for replacement

Red Bull Salzburg director of football Christoph Freund has revealed that Max Wober 'expressed' his wish to join Leeds United, but is confident the club can find a replacement.

Wober became Leeds' first signing of the January transfer window when he completed his switch from reigning Austrian Bundesliga champions RB Salzburg on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old was a key player for the Red Bulls and won three domestic league titles during his spell at the club. The Austrian international has now been reunited with Jesse Marsch, who brought him to RB Salzburg back in 2019.

He is also the fourth Leeds signing to have previously played under Marsch at another club, and Freund says that it was Wober's 'wish' to join Leeds that pushed the transfer over the line.

“He was an extremely important player, but it was his express wish,” Salzburger Nachrichten report Freund saying.

“However, I am convinced that we can replace him. It’s a great opportunity for the young players again.”

Leeds have now signed three players from Red Bull Salzburg since Marsch's arrival at Elland Road. Wober will link up with his former teammates Rasmus Kristensen and Brenden Aaronson, who joined the Whites back in the summer.
