Max Mara Spring 2027 Reworks Safari Jackets and Travel Dressing for Everyday Life

Max Mara turned travel dressing into an everyday wardrobe for spring 2027, presenting safari jackets, cargo vests and oversized trench coats at Milan Fashion Week on Sept. 24. Called "Far Horizon," the collection draws on the adventurous women of the 1930s.

Creative director Ian Griffiths translated that reference through practical pockets, adjustable straps and clothes designed with movement in mind. The safari jacket anchors the collection. Max Mara's official notes describe versions in textured linen and lustrous gabardine, while cargo vests are cut to sit over jackets, adding another layer of storage and structure.

Accessories follow the same practical approach. Bags convert between crossbody, clutch, and rucksack configurations, giving a single piece several ways to be carried. The utility references become less literal through fabric choices. Organza overalls introduce transparency to a traditionally workwear silhouette, while roomy trenches with low-set belts soften the outline of familiar outerwear.

According to Marie Claire Australia, Griffiths's inspirations included wildlife filmmaker Osa Johnson, aviators Amelia Earhart and Beryl Markham, travel writer Freya Stark and driver Eva Dickson. The clothes take their cues from travel wardrobes without recreating them as historical costumes.

Speaking to Vogue before the show, Griffiths described his approach as "utility luxe," connecting the collection's functional details to a longstanding part of Max Mara's identity. Vogue's runway coverage also highlighted high-waisted trousers and skirts secured with broad belts, alongside a closing section of fine-gauge knitted eveningwear. Some looks achieved the appearance of a dress through separate pieces.

Across the collection, pockets, layering and convertible accessories give the travel theme a concrete expression. The resulting wardrobe centres on familiar garments, reshaped through lighter materials and more relaxed proportions.
