Science and magic by their very nature are contradictory practices, but on the Max Mara Spring/Summer 2025 runway at Milan Fashion Week, the Italian fashion house proved the two make for undeniable sartorial chemistry.
As is custom for the luxury brand, their latest collection speaks to the pioneering work of fourth century mathematician, philosopher, astronomer and greatly loved teacher, Hypatia.
Drawing parallels between Hypatia’s works derived from Pythagoras and the practice of pattern making, whereby simple symbols on paper transform into three-dimensional structures as though of sheer magic, Max Mara proudly puts dressmaking darts on display.
Typically hidden away despite their ability to bring a garment to life, in the Spring/Summer collection we see these dart details stitched trigonometric into the brands signature tailoring and trench coats.
Further nods to the Neoplatonist philosopher and her works are seen in columnar knitted skirts and dresses as well as new jacket silhouettes, sharp and square in shape. For all logic and structure there is also magic and movement, seen in crumpled silks permanently criss-crossed with random creases.
“A crisp, tailored mix of chocolate, camel and black looks, with the best shirts in every shape and size you could imagine, I loved each, from the first look out featuring a double cuffed white shirt sitting neatly under a skirt suit to a simple oversized choc shirt paired with matching short shorts,” marie claire Australia’s Fashion Director, Naomi Smith comments.
“Perfect for the Australian summer, each look felt like it could work for the office or a party. The perfect blend of classic pieces, styled expertly with chic open side sandals that, too, worked with everything.”
