Max Burgin has been forced out of the Commonwealth Games after failing to recovery from injury.
Burgin had gone into the World Athletics Championships as the fastest man on the planet over 800metres but withdrew ahead of his heat with what he thought was a calf injury.
It later transpired to be deep vein thrombosis (DVT) but there was hope he could recover in time to compete at Birmingham 2022.
However, on Monday morning Burgin announced he would not be fit to take his place on the start line.
“It’s gutting to have now missed out on two major champs over a medical issue that came out of nowhere,” he said. “It just seems like terrible bad luck but I’m sure soon my fortunes will change and I’ll be competing regularly at future champs having the success I know I can achieve.
“This DVT is something that can be fixed easily and relatively quickly. I’m aiming and looking forward to representing my country again soon.”
Team England’s athletics leader Kelly Sotherton said: “First and foremost, we hope Max has a quick recovery and we send him our best wishes.
“Max was a real medal hope for Team England and all of us feel desperately sad for him that he won’t get the opportunity to demonstrate just what a brilliantly talented athlete he is in front of his crowd.”
