Mauricio Pochettino backed to succeed Pep Guardiola as Man City manager

Former striker Trevor Sinclair believes former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain head coach Mauricio Pochettino could be the ideal man for when the time comes for Manchester City to replace Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola, who is close to embarking on his seventh season in charge at the Etihad Stadium, is out-of-contract next summer and has made the decision not to put pen to paper on a new deal this summer. Instead, he has already admitted that he will make a decision on his future closer towards the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

City have significantly backed Guardiola in the transfer market already this summer, bringing in the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Erling Haaland. Both have arrived for big-money transfer fees and were players the manager wanted to add to his squad.

Their arrivals have suggested that Guardiola has no plans to leave the Etihad Stadium anytime soon, although nothing can be taken for granted. However, when the time eventually comes for Guardiola to depart, Sinclair believes Pochettino would be the perfect replacement.

The Argentine is currently out-of-work after leaving PSG earlier this week. He is understood to be keen on the idea of managing in England once again and City, at some stage, could be the ideal club, according to former striker Sinclair.

"You look at him and he knows how to deal with egos," Sinclair told talkSPORT. "He seems to have a fantastic rapport with players.

"It doesn't matter how big the players are, we have seen him managing [Lionel] Messi, [Kylian] Mbappe and Neymar. So on that side of things, I think he is safe hands. He is a charming man and I think he comes across well in the media.

"I actually feel that Manchester City might be the club for him. I think he might have a bit of a sabbatical now, because I'm sure he is not struggling for finances.

"But I think Manchester City could be the one for him. If Guardiola walks away at a certain stage, that might be a hot seat ready to take for Pochettino.
