It looks like Maul could rise from the dead once again, as Maul – Shadow Lord supervising director Brad Rau teases that the ex-Sith's death in Star Wars Rebels might not be so permanent.
In Rebels, Maul tracks down Obi-Wan Kenobi – who seemingly killed him in The Phantom Menace – on Tatooine, and the two duel once more. This time, though, Obi-Wan kills Maul for good (Shadow Lord is set before Rebels on the Star Wars timeline).
"You never know," Rau told Polygon when asked if Maul could return from the dead in the future. "We're just focusing on this one time period right now."
Similarly, Rau previously told GamesRadar+ that, even though Maul's story continues in Solo: A Star Wars Story and Rebels, there are still surprises in store.
"I will say, when we approach these kinds of stories where you know a certain character's end, it's not necessarily a straight line," he teased. "So, we wanted to make sure that we are making surprising bobs and weaves in a storyline that the fans are not expecting. Ideally, that's what we're doing. Also, there's a lot of new characters you've never seen before, and you don't know their fates and their destiny, and that's a big part of the story as well."
So far in Shadow Lord, we've seen Maul, the former leader of the Shadow Collective, begin reasserting control over the criminal underworld – and try to recruit a young Twi'lek named Devon Izara as his apprentice. The show is one of the highest rated Star Wars projects ever so far, and our own Maul – Shadow Lord review awarded the show 4 stars.
