Matty Healy backs Newcastle for Champions League and aims dig at Sunderland during The 1975 gig

Matty Healy received quite the reaction from a packed Geordie crowd on Wednesday night as he back his beloved Newcastle United for Champions League football next season, while aiming a dig at Newcastle, during The 1975's gig at the Utilita Arena.

While he spent much of his youth in the North West, singer Matty is very much a Toon fan, with him taking trips to St James Park whenever his schedule allows, to join dad Tim Healy and often younger brother Louis to cheer on the Magpies. Matty also has an NUFC tattoo and, after a first half which didn't see too much interaction with the capacity audience, Matty wasted little time in addressing his Geodrdie roots in the latter part of the show.

After dad Tim delighted everyone inside the Utilita Arena with his cameo earlier on in the night, Matt spoke about his affiliation and life long support of United, telling fans: "We are very, very happy to be here in God’s country. We’re going to get in the Champions League. We’re going to get in the Champion’s League - with belief! We love playing Newcastle, I grew up here."

He added: "This is the hometown show where everyone comes up and goes eee yeah; this is our family here, everyone's going 'eee you’re doing so well with your music it’s amazing’.”

And, just to e sure there were plenty of Magpies fans in attendance, Matty also had a cheeky jab at Newcastle's Wearside rivals. Introducing TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME, the frontman quipped: "don’t like Mackems” rather than like “don’t like menthols” line that has become a TikTok viral sensation on recent weeks.

The mention of NUFC and appearance of dad Tim to belt out a tune wasn't the only nod to Matty's Geordie heritage during the near two and a half hour show. He has become infamous for tucking into raw meat during the show and decided to wash it down with a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale, much to the delight of the slightly perplexed Newcastle crowd.
