Matthew Wright has caused a divide among This Morning viewers as he declared King Charles was 'not my king' during a fruious rant on the programme. The journalist and presenter was on the ITV daytime show on Wednesday (April 12) as he joined hosts Josie Gibson and Craig Doyle live in the studio.
The trio were joined by Camilla Tominey as they discussed the latest news headlines and topics getting people talking in the daily 'This Morning's View' segment. Among the topics being discussed were details of King Charles III's upcoming Coronation which takes place on May 6 , which is the former investiture of a monarch with their regal powers
But Matthew failed to hold back his frustrations as he claimed taxpayers should not be funding the Coronation of King Charles and his wife, Camilla, who will officially become Queen instead of Queen Consort.
"It’s a different world – the upper crust – and I’m going to be protesting at the waste of my taxes on this nonsense," Matthew fumed when he got his moment to talk. "We had a vote on Brexit but we’ve had 1000 years of this nonsense and spend billions of pounds and we don’t even get a vote on it. I think it’s an outrage," he added.
When asked by host Craig if he thought it would be nice to see people coming together and celebrating, Matthew, again, didn't hold back. "No it is about royals and peasants and I am not a peasant," he responded. "He is not my king – I haven’t chosen him or voted for him but my taxes go to support him and it’s outrageous. I don’t support it."
He added: "My taxes go to support him and it's outrageous, I want my taxes to support the elderly people in need. Not the very wealthy." But chiming in, Camilla asked her co-star: "Maybe we should elect a president instead, who would you have then you had the choice?" to which Matthew retorted: "Why not bother with anybody at all!"
Fellow journalist and guest Camilla also brought up the fact the procession route had been reduced from the one the late Queen Elizabeth undertook in 1953. But the pair debated whether this was to reduce costs, avoid disruptions on the street of the capital, or had been downgraded because "the groundswell of love is not there," as Matthew suggested.
But Matthew's approach to the topic upset some viewers. @JulesItsjules tweeted: "Get Matthew Wright off my television. So shouty and so rude." @bramwell_ashley fumed: "Oh shut up Mathew 'he’s not my king I didn’t vote for him'. Quiet happy to take the money the monarchy bring into the country tho #ThisMorning."
However, some backed his opinion. @lightupvm said: "Great to see @Matthew_Wright speak for those who don’t GA* about the royals on #thismorning Refreshing!" @shuvinogrigio added: "Couldn’t agree more with Matthew Wright about the coronation #ThisMorning."
