Matthew Perry’s iconic scenes from ‘Friends’
Matthew Perry’s hope of being remembered for “helping people to recover” from addiction has been realised as a foundation is set up in the late actor’s name.
The Friends star, who shot to international fame for his portrayal of the affable and sarcastic jokester Chandler Bing, died on 28 October in an apparent drowning in his hot tub. He was 54.
On Friday (3 November), it was announced that The Matthew Perry Foundation had been set up in his name. “In the spirit of Matthew Perry’s enduring commitment to helping others struggling with the disease of addiction, we embark on a journey to honour his legacy... guided by his own words and experiences, and driven by his passion for making a difference in as many lives as possible,” the opening statement read.
A recovering addict, Perry struggled with drug and alcohol addiction throughout his life. Last year, while promoting his book Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, the actor admitted that he hoped he would be remembered for his outreach work, rather than his time on the hit sitcom.
“When I die, as far as my so-called accomplishments go, it would be nice if Friends were listed far behind the things I did to try to help other people,” he said. “I know it won’t happen, but it would be nice.”
