Matteo Guendouzi hands Edu valuable transfer lesson amid Arsenal star's proposed Ligue 1 move

Matteo Guendouzi left Arsenal following a bad relationship with the manager and the fans which has only gotten worse since his first loan departure in 2019. However, the Frenchman has recently taught Edu a valuable lesson that has benefitted the Gunners.

The midfielder left the north London side on a permanent deal at the start of the summer transfer window as Marseille activated the obligation-to-buy clause in his loan that was agreed upon ahead of the previous season. A permanent fee was settled at £9 million which was certainly below his value after the successful season he had.

Arsenal certainly would have generated more funds for the midfielder if they prevented putting an option-to-buy clause in his loan contract. Edu has seemed to learn from this during the current transfer window, which could benefit the Gunners in the future.

Nuno Tavares' proposed loan move to Atalanta is now in doubt after the Serie A side reportedly refused Arsenal's request for a straight loan without an option to buy, according to Italian journalist Michele Criscitiello. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now gone on to report that the Portugal defender is close to moving to Marseille on a loan deal without a buy-option in the agreement.

Arsenal have lost out on a lot of money in the past from agreeing to clauses in loan moves for young players as their value has seen a major increase due to their success away from the club. Adding an option-to-buy in the loan deal prevents the Gunners from taking advantage of the player's true value.

The Gunners potentially took major losses on Guendouzi and Dinos Mavropanos whose values increased after successful loan moves away from the club last season, as the option-to-buy clause in their loan contract prevented Arsenal from reaping the rewards from their impressive spells away from the club.

It seems Edu has learned from these deals and is preventing the same situation with Tavares. The Portuguese full-back is another talent who is equipped with a lot of potential and agreeing to a transfer fee for next season could prevent Arsenal from gaining the money for what he is worth.

Tavares had large spells where he played in the Premier League in the previous campaign, however, he was always regarded as a back-up to Kieran Tierney as despite the youngster hitting good form during a point in the season, he was unable to progress due to the Scotsman taking his place whenever he was available for selection.

There was a stage during the early parts of last season where his performances had been so good that the supporters were calling for him to take Tierney’s spot in Arteta’s starting XI. His energy up and down the left-hand side was a breath of fresh air for Arsenal and his presence had a contagious feel amongst the squad.

It is certainly a risk for Arsenal to sell Tavares before he grows as an experienced player. Edu’s experience with Guendouzi and Mavropanos has crucially taught him not to add option-to-buy clauses in young players’ contracts.
