Matt Turner's one-word Tottenham verdict that Arsenal fans will love amid talk of £5.5m transfer

Arsenal could be about to sign a goalkeeper for the fourth transfer window in a row, amid links to Matt Turner.

After selling Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa in the summer of 2020, a host of stoppers have arrived in north London in the attempt to stake a claim to be number one or serve as back-up.

Runar Alex Runarsson was signed shortly after Martinez's exit but after failing to convince that he's at the required level to play for the Gunners, manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu had to bring in cover.

Therefore, last January saw Mat Ryan join on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion for the rest of the season.

And in the summer just gone, Aaron Ramsdale completed a £24million move from Sheffield United and has since taken over as Arsenal's first-choice goalkeeper from Bernd Leno.

Speaking of the German, appearances have been few and far between since September as no European football this season has limited his game time significantly.

With that said, despite being the 'cup goalkeeper' he was left out of the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool and missed the return meeting on Thursday night with a back problem.

But having featured in every League Cup fixture barring the second round win over West Brom, only to be dropped for the trip to Anfield, was a clear indication that he is firmly behind Ramsdale in the pecking order.

Furthermore, with the Gunners already out of the FA Cup, it's difficult to see Leno featuring much between now and the end of the season, so an exit would be best in order to play regularly.

As a result, football.london understands that Arteta has told the 29-year-old that he's free to leave before the January transfer window closes.

Newcastle are among several clubs in talks with Leno, whilst the north London outfit have already identified his replacement in Turner, who plays his football in the United States with Major League Soccer (MLS) side New England Revolution.

In fact, it's been reported that the 27-year-old has been the subject of a 'strong' bid from Edu and company - believed to be around £5.5m.

Whilst Arsenal fans might not know too much about Turner, they will most certainly love what he's previously said about north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

A post from the goalkeeper's Twitter account has resurfaced in the wake of the transfer rumours and it centered around him praising Leicester City and aiming a dig at Spurs in one swoop.

Back on May 2, 2016, Spurs let a 2-0 lead slip away at Chelsea to draw 2-2 - a result that meant the Foxes were crowned Premier League champions in what was a fairytale season for Claudio Ranieri's side.

Soon after the final whistle blew at Stamford Bridge, Turner took to social media to sum up Tottenham in one word.

"Congrats to @LCFC truly and incredible campaign, drink it all in," he wrote. "Tottenham out there being as classless as ever."

Turner ending his tweet with the #COYG (Come On You Gunners) would suggest he's an Arsenal fan so he could be on the verge of sealing a dream transfer.

Judging by the response on Reddit, he'd be a welcome addition to the Gunners family.
