Matt Goss in tears after 'bonkers' BBC Strictly dance-off as Nadiya addresses critics

It was an emotional night on the Strictly dancefloor as Matt Goss waved goodbye after facing the dreaded dance-off on Sunday night (October 16). The overwhelmed Bros star cried after being sent home in the fourth week.

Matt, 54, and his professional dance partner Nadiya Bychkova were in the dance-off with Kym Marsh and Graziano Di Prima following a combination of judges' scores from Saturday night's live show and public vote. Kym and Graziano performed their Samba to Volare by Gipsy Kings again then Matt and Nadiya reprised their jive to All Shook Up in a bid to impress the judges and remain in the competition.

After all four judges Anton Du Beke, Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and head judge Shirley Ballas voted to save Kym, Matt rejoined host Tess Daly, and he filled up with tears as he thanked supporters. The singer was comforted by Nadiya who addressed critics, saying "not many people know you."

Viewers took to Twitter to say the 'shy' star had been 'misunderstood' as he bowed out of the BBC dance contest. "When you came to us you said you have a shy bone," said Tess. "Yeah I do. I still do," he told her.

Matt, who shot to fame in the late 80s in the band Bros with massive hits including When Will I Be Famous, I Owe You Nothing and Drop The Boy and went on to have a residency in Las Vegas, said: “It’s an extraordinary experience, I have been in America for 25 years."

Thanking the judges and his partner he said: "Thank you judges for your candour, you’ve helped me in many ways. My posture – Anton, I am more aware of it. This lovely lady beside me, a world champion with all the patience. I am very honoured to have danced with you, and everyone who is still in, I love you guys, go smash it guys.”

Asked if she had any words for her partner, an emotional Nadiya said: “First I’m so grateful that I got to teach and dance with a music icon. But, more important than this, I got the privilege to get to know Matt, for who you really are."

She added: "Not many people know you and you’re a beautiful soul, very kind human and a real gentleman.” Tess told him: "We've absolutely loved having you. On behalf of all the Bros fans all over the world, it's been an honour to have you with us."

@sue_fairbysmith tweeted: "I think Matt was very misunderstood. Many were too quick to judge. He gave it his all so well done x" And @man18united said: "#Strictly Matt out on a high. It's clear he and Nadiya got on really well. He was so misunderstood, whatever he did wasn't enough for the inconsistent and very harsh judges, who let others get away with stuff they criticised him for."

@Shadows_by_char also said: "I think Matt is massively misunderstood." And @mel1706 wrote: "Definitely found that love again for this man - he's such a beautiful and gentle guy #Strictly well done Matt you did yourself proud (and us fans) thanks Nadiya for looking after him." And @Neziya3 said: "So sorry to see Matt go, he deserved to stay. Very calm and lovely man. We will miss you!"

And @natsissuper tweeted: "#Strictly Matt is a shy, gentle soul that needs to be protected at all costs! Well done for getting this far, out of your comfort zone."

With three votes to Kym and Graziano, it meant they had won the majority vote and would be staying in the competition regardless, however head judge Shirley also said she would have saved them. Fans were stunned to see former Coronation Street star Kym in the dance-off after she landed in the top end of the leaderboard with 32 points out of a possible 40.

@rubyrosettared exclaimed: "Kym and Graziano in the dance off?? Absolutely bonkers!" @FlopsyPickle fumed: "Honestly the public are a bloody nightmare! How on earth is Tony safe but Kym is in the dance off?"

@meganpsitn tweeted: "I didn't think Kym would be in the dance-off. I thought being at the top of that middle block would have been enough to get her through another week." @pauladooley170 said: "Kym and Graziano I knew it was going to be a shock who was in the bottom two but didn't think it would be them." And @wessyscott gasped: "WHAT?!?! Kym and Gratziano?!?! I’m shook."
