Former GOP Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz has announced that he will not be returning to Congress after withdrawing his name as President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general. In an interview with Charlie Kirk, Gaetz revealed that he will be serving Trump in a different capacity, although he did not specify the exact role.
Gaetz expressed his commitment to continue being actively involved in the political arena, stating, “I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s going to be from a new perch.” He emphasized that he does not intend to join the 119th Congress and expressed confidence in the potential candidates vying for his seat in Florida.
He praised the individuals running for his seat, describing them as inspiring figures with a strong dedication to public service. Gaetz expressed his excitement for the future of Northwest Florida, anticipating that the region will benefit from new leadership and representation.
Regarding his ongoing support for President Trump, Gaetz affirmed his commitment to continue advocating for the President's agenda. He stated, “I’m going to be fighting for President Trump. I’m going to be doing whatever he asks of me, as I always have.” Gaetz also acknowledged that his decision not to seek re-election was influenced by his belief that eight years in Congress was a sufficient period of service.
